________________________________________________

Perhaps, in no other hexagram is there such a harmonious relationship between the main categories - Light and Darkness, as is given in this hexagram; although both forces - Light and Darkness - are recognized as equivalent, theoretical preference is still given to the active, centrifugal force of Light over the passive, centripetal force of Darkness. This is expressed in the fact that the power of Light is sometimes called (as in this case) great, and the power of Darkness - small. The power of Light tends to strive upward, while the power of Darkness gravitates downward. But in the world, events happen for the good only with a harmonious combination of both forces, which are ideally predisposed to interaction. Unilateral overdevelopment of one of them at the expense of the other leads to disastrous consequences. In this hexagram, all the power of Light is concentrated below, and the power of Darkness is concentrated above. Therefore, if we take into account the directions of their movement indicated above: Light - up, and Darkness - down, then it is clear that here, than anywhere else, they come into interaction, having the widest access to each other. This can also be viewed from the other side: the inner here is filled with the pure power of creativity, and on the outside it is to be executed, i.e. complete possibility of realizing a creative plan, to which nothing offers resistance, and the external environment submits to it in complete compliance. Therefore, it is not surprising that this maximum opportunity for creation in the Yi Jing tradition is dated to spring as the period of maximum development of creativity in nature. According to the mythological views of China, in the spring the active force of Light acts from the inside, from the roots of plants, causing their growth, and the force of Darkness, like matter, overgrows it and imparts external visibility, realization to the creative force of Light, as if clothes it, and it receives the opportunity for full development , because in this situation everything great comes, and everything insignificant goes away. However, this cannot last forever, this is only a temporary situation, which, like spring in autumn, must be replaced by the opposite situation, expressed in the next (12) hexagram. Their alternation expresses a natural rhythm in which destruction is as necessary as creation. Here one involuntarily recalls the words of Goethe: “Nature invented death in order to have a lot of life.” — Translated into concepts relating to the process of cognition, this is the situation when, after the onset, complete harmony is achieved between the knowledge accumulated previously and acquired again, to such an extent that the line between them is erased, and they represent a single sum of knowledge worthwhile in complete harmony with its implementation. This understanding arises in the works of commentators more from the general theory and from the image of the hexagram itself than from a very laconic text: Flourishing. Small things go, great things come. Happiness. Development.
1
Here the power of Light begins its action, coming from bottom to top, from inside to outside. Its action is not limited to this one position, but extends to the following ones occupied by the same power of Light. Here she carries with her everything organically connected with her. If every force calls forth a reaction, then here is the moment when it is subdued. But the opposition can be either internal, appearing, for example, in the sphere of ethics (as a temptation acting internally), so that until it is exposed, it appears as the actor’s own will, or external, not captivating the actor, but suppressing him. Infatuation and violence are two, so to speak, tempters that deviate the activist from his normal path. In this position, which represents the greatest depth of the inner sphere of the figure, in a situation of victory over resistance and harmonious unity of opposites, this is a victory, first of all, over internal temptation. As a result, external pressure becomes completely surmountable, and the campaign against it should be crowned with success. Therefore, the Central striving outward is natural here and brings the best results. In the text this is expressed in the following image: In the beginning there is a strong feature. When a reed is torn, [other stems] are pulled behind them, since it grows in a bunch. The hike is fortunate.
2
At the culmination of the inner revelation of the creative power of Light, it must extend to absolutely everything. Even the periphery must be covered by it, even the most decadent elements must be accepted by it in the same way as those who are full of determination and strength, those who dare to “float up the river” - to break out in life. Here it is not enough to limit ourselves to assisting close, related forces, as was the case at the previous stage. Given the universality of the action of the force of creativity at a given stage of its development, the “distant” should not be abandoned, because here the very concept of personal attachments perishes, like everything that limits the universality and objective scope of creativity to personal interests. Such personal friendship of the lin would interfere with purposefulness - a quality that deserves special encouragement here, because the goal here is a creative influence on everything surrounding the figure. Under such conditions, nothing outside can have a suppressive effect on him, and thus the internal aspect of the forces of resistance cannot seduce him, for all his aspiration is directed outward. The text develops these thoughts with the following formula: The strong trait comes second. Cover the outskirts too. Use pop-ups on the river. Don't leave those who are distant. [Personal] friendship is over. You will be praised for purposeful actions.
3
Even in such a fortunate situation, the crisis still remains a crisis, because here for the first time a real transition from the internal to the external takes place. Here creativity comes into contact with the environment in which it must manifest itself. This cannot be without difficulties, and, as a reminder of the time limitations of any creativity, the first words of the text sound, clear and without comment. But the persistence of the very power of creativity makes it possible to endure difficulties here. The inner truthfulness of creativity here is so organically inherent in it that it turns out to be unnecessary to worry about it, for there will be no shortage of forces that feed it. The text is understood in this sense: The strongest trait is in third place. There is no smooth surface [that would remain] without potholes; there is no leaving without return. If you are persistent in difficulties, then there will be no blasphemy. Do not be sad about your truth: there will be prosperity in food.
4
We have seen that in this hexagram the force of Light and the force of Darkness appear in mutual movement towards each other. The latter is characterized by a downward tendency. Here, in the fourth position, the power of Darkness begins to act for the first time. Therefore, her rapid flight downward is especially expressed here. The essence of performance - completely pliable and plastic matter seeks to clothe the creative impulse rising from below. Only together with him can the power of Darkness act. In itself, it is not saturated with reality, it is “not rich.” But if the activity of creativity does not encounter any obstacles and all its forces can act together, starting from the first impulse (as shown in the text of the first line of this hexagram), then the power of Darkness here will not be delayed by anything in its desire for the creative power of Light. The “neighbors” of the force acting in this position—the same forces of Darkness in the two upper positions—are completely consistent with it. Therefore, here, as in the first position, no warning is required, for example, about the need for sincere relationships with others. Here they are seized by the same desire, and the truthfulness of the relationship here, of course, is self-evident. Thanks to this, such a complete victory over the opposing forces is possible here that they, being here subordinated to the complete harmony of what was achieved before and acquired in the present, turn from an adversary into an ally. Overcome resistance becomes a driving force. - Here we mean that moment in the process of cognition when the knowledge accumulated before turns from the sum of ideas different from the content of new knowledge into the sum of ideas included with it in unified system and therefore supporting him. It is necessary to make a reservation that such an understanding of the text is characteristic only of commentators of the private, critical school we have chosen (especially Wang Yi and Diao Bao. Such pillars of official orthodoxy as Cheng Yi-chuano and Zhu Xi understand this passage completely differently, dividing phrases of the text with other punctuation marks , placed in other places. But, as Diao Bao rightly pointed out, both of them make a gross philological mistake, not taking into account the ancient commentary “Xiao Xiang-Zhuano”). All these thoughts are expressed in the text like this: The weak point is in fourth place. Those who are rapidly flying down are not rich, [but all of them,] because of their proximity, do not [need] a warning about truthfulness.
5
Already at the previous stage, the power of this flourishing situation is reflected in the current that all inhibitory influences can be transformed into beneficial ones. In this position it reaches even greater intensity due to the qualities that are symbolized here. This is, firstly, the quality of pliability, the absence of inertia (weak trait) in the one who occupies the (fifth) position of the external, revealed (upper trigram) culmination. Secondly, this is the quality of mutual understanding between superiors and inferiors (expressed in “correspondence”). Such qualities characterize, for example, a ruler who does not separate himself from the subjects he governs, but, on the contrary, enters into the closest communication with them, becoming related to them. This is expressed in the legend of King I, who gave his daughters in marriage to his subjects, to whom they, as wives, had to submit, despite their origin. - No matter how sublime the newly acquired knowledge may be, no matter how deep the errors in the previously accumulated experience, here such harmonization occurs between them that the errors no longer have a negative effect, and their very fallacy can be used for positive experience, since here their fallacy is fully recognized. This is possible only with the finite impartiality of the subject. The following images are given in the text: The weak point is in fifth place. King Yi gave his daughters in marriage and thus blessed [them] with initial happiness.
6
It has already been pointed out that even this maximum flourishing is only one of the situations. As a temporary situation, it cannot last forever, but naturally must end, i.e. go into its opposite - into decline, to which the next hexagram is dedicated. In fact, if each hexagram depicts the development of a given situation over time, and the fifth position expresses the maximum of this development, then the sixth position can already express only decline, only a decrease in the results achieved. In addition, this is the top feature of the trigram, the execution of which is characterized not by strength, but by weakness (weak features), therefore, the weakness of the subject is manifested here more intensely than anywhere else. Everything that was subordinate to him at the previous stages begins to emerge from subordination, acquires independence, and disintegration begins. It happens with necessity, and it must be treated as, for example, the natural onset of autumn in the cycle of the year. In any case, if the subject is weak, trying to use an army will not lead him to good. His will will not be accepted for execution, but, on the contrary, everything subordinate to him will begin to express its own will: “the will will be expressed from the cities.” But not only active intervention by force does not lead to good consequences. Even one inert and passive desire to preserve the achievements of the past is ineffective here, because the time of decline is already coming, and the inert preservation of the past only delays the decline towards decline in this period. It will only be wasted unproductive time, which you will have to regret. The text expresses it this way: There is a weak line at the top. The city rampart [falls] back into the moat. Don't use troops. From the small towns [their own] will will be expressed. Durability - unfortunately.

The name speaks for itself. Dawn is not only the most beautiful time of day, but perhaps the most harmonious combination of trigrams. All problems are resolved as if by themselves, the fog of doubt dissipates, and you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Unfortunately, the hour of dawn is short, so don't stop there. The sun will rise soon.

Statics

This unusual sign and, as a rule, understood without comment.

"Rejuvenated" hexagram

Things are expected to improve soon in an unusual way for you.

Bottom line.

The movement towards harmony covers almost everything around. However, some continue to resist. However, soon they will accept your proposals.

Second line.

The process of organizing things becomes more active. More and more new people and events are involved in it. If you want to achieve maximum success, pay attention to everyone and everything around you. When communicating, be guided by the interests of the business, and not by personal sympathies. “You will be praised for your determination.”

Third line.

You have enough strength and knowledge to achieve what you want. Don't doubt that you are right. You have already received confirmation of this.

Fourth line.

The resistance shown to you does not contain destructive motives, quite the contrary. By attracting opponents to your side, you will once again become convinced of your own strength. Opponents have long felt it.

Fifth line.

Harmony in compromise. Now you can give up some principles in order to preserve what has been achieved. Give up the steering wheel, but under no circumstances give us the compass.

Top line.

It is useless to force back the departing harmony. You must make radical changes within yourself. This is why you are holding this book in your hands.

Tai (Flourishing): great, distinguished, abundant, prosperous; peaceful, fertile; spread everywhere, saturate, permeate, communicate (properties); smooth, slippery; extraordinary, extravagant, wonderful. Great sacrifices were performed on Mount Taishan, connecting Heaven and Earth. The hieroglyph depicts a man in water, connected to the flow of Tao.

Small things go, great things come.
Happiness. Development.

The flow of spirit brings joy, perfection and prosperity. You are connected to this flow. You can spread excellence and prosperity through communication with others and the world. Everything small and insignificant goes away; everything great and significant comes. You have the opportunity to develop your fundamental ideas in an atmosphere of creativity, joy and mutual support. Expand your involvement and share your energy. The way is open. The initial accomplishment turns into the final accomplishment. Be proactive. Go beyond your limits and get to the heart of things. Your awareness of yourself and others must undergo a significant change. Support and encourage your neighbors. This time is favorable for connecting the main forces of the universe with human nature, when a person can see his own weak reflection in them. Be confident and inwardly focused. Cast aside your doubts. This path will continue.

Therefore, if we take into account the directions of their movement indicated above: Light - up, and Darkness - down, then it is clear that here, than anywhere else, they come into interaction, having the widest access to each other.

External and Inner worlds: Earth and Sky

Expansion and prosperity contain the hidden possibility of realizing one's potential.

Subsequence

Advance and flourish, then stop. Knowing this allows you to seize the moment.

A noble person takes advantage of the time of prosperity to complete the path of Heaven and Earth.
A noble man uses appeasement to bring justice to his subjects.

Hexagram lines

Line 1

First nine

When a reed is torn, other stems follow it,
Because it grows in a bunch.
The hike is fortunate.

Make vigorous efforts to rise from a low position among your peers. Put things in order in your thoughts and deeds. The way is open. Let him lead you into the big world.

As a result, external pressure becomes completely surmountable, and the campaign against it should be crowned with success. Therefore, the central aspiration to the outside is natural here and brings the best results.

Line 2

Nine second

Cover the outskirts too.
We need to float up on the river. Don't leave those who are distant.
Personal friendship is over.
You will be praised for purposeful actions.

You must mobilize all your resources in order to float on the river - to move to a prominent place in the stream of life. At the same time, you will have to give up many personal attachments. In the end, your dedication will be praised.

At the culmination of the inner revelation of the creative power of Light, it must extend to absolutely everything. Even the periphery must be embraced by it, even the most decadent elements must be accepted by it just as those who are full of determination and strength, those who dare to “float up the river” - to break out in life. Under such conditions, nothing outside can have a suppressive effect on him, and thus the internal aspect of the forces of resistance cannot seduce him, for all his aspiration is directed outward.

Line 3

Nine three

There is no smooth surface that would remain without potholes.
There is no leaving without return.
If you remain persistent in difficulties, there will be no blasphemy.
Don't be sad about your truth.
There will be prosperity in food.

Difficulties arise in the transition from internal to external. But if you can't leave something behind, you won't be able to come back later. Resilience will help you overcome adversity. There is a connection with the spirits in the situation - they will serve as a nourishing force and protect you.

Even in such a fortunate situation, the crisis still remains a crisis, because here for the first time a real transition from the internal to the external takes place. Here creativity comes into contact with the environment in which it must manifest itself. This cannot be without difficulties, and, as a reminder of the time limitations of all creativity, the first words of the text sound, clear and without comment. Line 4

Six fourth

Swift flight.
If you are not rich, turn to your neighbor.
There are no prohibitions due to truthfulness.

You fly like a bird leaving its nest. If you don't have what you need right now, turn to friends or family for help. Take advantage of the spirit connection you already have. Overcome resistance becomes a driving force.

In itself it is not saturated with reality, it is “not rich”. But if the activity of creativity does not encounter any obstacles and all its forces can act together, starting from the first impulse (as shown in the text of the first line of this hexagram), then the power of Darkness here will not be delayed by anything in its desire for the creative power of Light. The “neighbors” of the force acting in this position - the same forces of Darkness in the two upper positions - are completely consistent with it.

Therefore, here, as in the first position, no warning is required, for example, about the need for sincere relationships with others. Line 5

Six fifth

The king sent brides, and this brought prosperity.
Original happiness.

By passing off his daughters as subordinates, the legendary King Yi united the highest and the lowest. This is what you should do in your quest to find harmony. The path is open, the situation is favorable (original happiness).

Already at the previous stage, the power of this flourishing situation is reflected in the fact that all inhibitory influences can be transformed into beneficial ones. In this position it reaches even greater intensity due to the qualities that are symbolized here. This is, firstly, the quality of pliability, the absence of inertia (weak trait) in the one who occupies the (fifth) position of the external, revealed (upper trigram) culmination. This is possible only with the finite impartiality of the subject.

Line 6

There's a six at the top

The city rampart will collapse into the ditch again.
Don't use troops.
In your city, exercise your will.
Durability - unfortunately.

The great flowering cannot last forever. This is the natural course of things. Trying to use your strength (army) will only make the situation worse. Even a strong desire to preserve your achievements will lead nowhere. Your destiny is changing. We need to gather our strength again.

Even one inert and passive desire to preserve the achievements of the past is ineffective here, because the time of decline is already coming, and the inert preservation of the past only delays the decline towards decline in this period. It will only be wasted unproductive time, which you will have to regret.

This is a very successful period - happiness has turned its face towards you, now is a great time for career growth, for the realization of plans and desires. But don't forget about your friends, don't be frivolous and careless. If you are interested in luck and success accompanying you as long as possible, try to back them up with results in different areas. Don’t waste your money, limit your spending, try to stay within your financial capabilities.

your wish

Your wish will definitely come true, but you should not rush things. Everything will happen in due time.

Explanation of the hexagram

full explanation of the 11th hexagram → Tai: Flourishing

explanation of the hexagram features from bottom to top

Perhaps, in no other hexagram is there such a harmonious relationship between the main categories - Light and Darkness, as is given in this hexagram; although both forces - Light and Darkness - are recognized as equivalent, theoretical preference is still given to the active, centrifugal force of Light over the passive, centripetal force of Darkness. Here one involuntarily recalls the words of Goethe: “Nature invented death in order to have a lot of life.” - Translated into concepts relating to the process of cognition, this is the situation when, after the onset, complete harmony is achieved between the knowledge accumulated previously and acquired again, to such an extent that the line between them is erased, and they represent a single sum of knowledge worthwhile in complete harmony with its implementation. This understanding arises in the works of commentators more from the general theory and from the image of the hexagram itself than from a very laconic text: Flourishing. Small things go, great things come. Happiness. Development.

At the culmination of the inner revelation of the creative power of Light, it must extend to absolutely everything. Even the periphery must be embraced by it, even the most decadent elements must be accepted by it in the same way as those who are full of determination and strength, those who dare to “float up the river” - to break out in life.

The “neighbors” of the force acting in a given position - the same forces of Darkness in the two upper positions - are completely consistent with it. What is meant here is that moment in the process of cognition when knowledge accumulated previously is transformed from a sum of ideas different from the content of new knowledge into a sum of ideas included with it in a single system and therefore supporting it.

No matter how sublime the newly acquired knowledge may be, no matter how deep the errors in the previously accumulated experience, there is such a harmonization between them that the errors no longer have a negative effect, and their very fallacy can be used for positive experience, since here their fallacy is fully recognized. This is possible only with the finite impartiality of the subject. The following images are given in the text: The weak point is in fifth place. King Yi gave his daughters in marriage and thus blessed [them] with initial happiness.
