They are divided into the Lord's, dedicated to Jesus Christ or other Persons of the Holy Trinity, and the Theotokos, dedicated to the Mother of God.

Lord's Twelve Feasts 7 : Exaltation of the Cross, Nativity of Christ, Epiphany, Entry into Jerusalem, Ascension, Trinity, Transfiguration.

Twelve Feasts of the Theotokos 4 : Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Entry into the Temple, Annunciation, Assumption.

And one twelfth feast - the Presentation of the Lord - in church tradition is considered not only a feast in honor of Christ, but also the Mother of God, although due to the peculiarities of the service it gravitates more towards the twelfth feasts of the Theotokos.

The Lord's twelve feasts are higher than the Theotokos, and in the peculiarities of the service on these holidays, and this is manifested as follows: if the Lord's feasts fall on a Sunday, then only the festive service is sung, the Sunday service is canceled, and on the Theotokos feasts that happen on Sunday, the Sunday service takes precedence service. In addition, all the Lord's feasts have special holiday antiphons (initial chants of the Liturgy), which are sung at the Liturgy on the day of the holiday itself, while on the feasts of the Mother of God the usual Sunday antiphons are sung.

All twelve feasts, both the Lord's and the Theotokos, have special days: pre-feast, post-feast and giving of the holiday.

Forefeast- these are the days preparing the holiday, after-feast - continuation of the holiday and giving- it’s like the holiday itself again, a kind of final point in the celebration of the holiday.

Some of the Lord's holidays, in addition, are preceded and concluded by special Saturdays and weeks (Sundays).

The twelfth holidays each have one forefeast day, with the exception of the Nativity of Christ, which has 5 forefeast days, and Epiphany, which has 4 forefeast days.

The number of days of post-feast varies from 1 to 8 days, depending on the greater or lesser proximity of some holidays to others or to days of fasting. The last day of the post-feast is called the giving of the holiday and differs from the other days of the post-feast in the greater solemnity of the divine service, having in the service most of the chants and prayers of the holiday itself.

The structure of the holiday is the ancient perception of time as a living, pulsating entity, in which each event is gradually prepared, gradually decreases and, before disappearing, flares up once again as a bright point. And the more important the event, the larger the holiday, the more developed this structure is.

Musically, this festive structure manifests itself especially clearly and prominently.

During the pre-feast period, at services dedicated to the ordinary days of Menaion, chants of the coming great holiday begin to appear, increasing in number and culminating on the day of the holiday itself, when only these festive chants are sung. On the days of the post-feast, the content of the services again returns to the saints and the events of the Menaion, but also has festive chants, the number of which decreases, and on the day of the celebration they again predominate.

Temple choir

Among the special chants of the twelve holidays, it is worth noting the festive irmos of the canons, which, interspersed with the reading of the troparia of the canon, reveal the meaning and place of this holiday in Sacred History and human life. At the Liturgy, instead of the chant “It is worthy to eat,” a special Zadostoynik is sung (i.e., “for” (instead of) “It is worthy ...”), which, like “It is worthy to eat,” glorifies the Mother of God, but in the light of this holiday. The text of the saint is the irmos of the 9th song of the festive Canon.

In terms of their music, these chants are most often original compositions or adaptations of spiritual composers. In addition, each twelfth holiday has its own special stichera, troparia, kontakia and magnification, which, even if sung in the indicated voice, always have a festive version of the sound.

For all twelve holidays there are so-called

At the festive All-Night Vigil of all twelve feasts, litia is served (which means “intensified prayer”). At the litia, church-wide and local saints are remembered, and special petitions are made for deliverance from all sorts of disasters. At this time, a special litany is sung with repeated “Lord, have mercy.” Then there is a blessing of five loaves (in memory of the Gospel miracle of feeding 5,000 people with five loaves), as well as wheat, wine and oil (oil). This custom dates back to ancient times - it is the consecration of the “fruits of the earth,” during which people pray to God to send abundance, prosperity and peace. During the burning of the bread, the troparion of the holiday is solemnly sung three times.

In ancient times, when the All-Night Vigil lasted all night, the blessing of the loaves was performed to strengthen the strength of those praying at the fraternal meal at the end of Vespers before Matins. This custom continues to this day in some monasteries, for example, on Mount Athos. In our churches, crushed pieces of bread, poured with wine, are distributed to worshipers during anointing.

Litiya is celebrated not only on the twelve feasts, but also on the feasts of great saints and venerated icons of the Mother of God, as well as patronal feasts (feast of the temple). According to the church charter, lithium is celebrated on every Sunday, but in modern parish practice of the Russian Orthodox Church it is omitted.

TROPARIA OF THE TWELENTH HOLIDAYS

Your Nativity, Virgin Mary,
joy to proclaim to the whole universe:
from You has arisen the Sun of righteousness, Christ our God,
and, having broken the oath, I will give a blessing,
and having abolished death, he gave us eternal life.

Holy Mother of God! You were born, and all people rejoiced, because Christ, our God, our light, was born from You. He lifted the curse from the people and gave a blessing; He abolished the torment of death in hell and gave us eternal life in heaven.

Save, Lord, Your people,
And bless Your heritage,
Granting victories to the opposition,
And preserving Your residence by Your Cross.

On the day of God's favor the transfiguration
and preaching the salvation of men;
in the temple of God the Virgin clearly appears,
and foretells Christ to everyone.

We too will cry out loudly:
Rejoice, the vision of the Creator is fulfilled.

Today the Virgin Mary came to God’s temple, and people learned that God’s mercy would soon appear, God would soon save people. We will praise the Mother of God like this, Rejoice, You give us the mercy of God.

Your Nativity, Christ our God,
the rise of the world and the light of reason:
in it for the stars who serve as stars learn
I bow to you to the Sun of Truth,
and lead you from the heights of the East.
Lord, glory to You.

Your Nativity, Christ our God, illuminated the world with truth, because then the wise men, who bowed to the stars, came with the star to You as to a real sun, and recognized You as a real sunrise. Lord, Glory to You.

In the Jordan I am baptized to You, Lord,
trinitarian worship appeared:
Your parents' voice bears witness to You,
naming your beloved Son,
and the Spirit, in the form of a dove,
Your statement is known in your words.

Appear, O Christ God,
and the world of enlightenment, glory to You.

When You, Lord, were baptized in the Jordan, people recognized the Holy Trinity, because the voice of God the Father called You the beloved Son, and the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed these words. You, Lord, came to earth and gave people light, glory to You.

Rejoice, blessed Virgin Mary,
from You has arisen the Sun of righteousness, Christ our God,
enlighten those who are in darkness;
rejoice and you, righteous elder,
received into the arms of the Liberator of our souls,
giving us resurrection.

Rejoice, O Virgin Mary, who has received the mercy of God, for from You was born Christ our God, our sun of truth, who illuminated us dark people. And you, righteous elder, rejoice, because you carried in your arms the Savior of our souls.

The day of our salvation is important,

and the appearance of the sacrament from the ages:
The Son of God is the Son of the Virgin,
and Gabriel preaches grace.

In the same way we cry out to the Mother of God:
rejoice, full of grace,
The Lord is with you.

Today is the beginning of our salvation, today is the revelation of the eternal mystery: the Son of God became the Son of the Virgin Mary, and Gabriel speaks of this joy. And we will sing to the Mother of God; Rejoice, merciful one, the Lord is with you.
